German typographer and teacher, 1865–1936. Moved to Berlin in 1893 and joined the Woellmer foundry, as head of their in-house print shop. After leaving Woellmer in 1907, Kulbe worked as publicity director and print designer for the publishers Scherl and Braunbeck, as well as for the Sarotti chocolate brand. For many years, Kulbe taught at Berlin’s I. Handwerkerschule on Lindenstrasse, where he held courses in drafting and designing for advanced students in the typographers’ class. He also contributed a number of articles to Deutscher Buch- und Steindrucker, a trade journal he cofounded. [Hardwig]
