Hermann Zapf’s Palatino Italic with its rarely seen swash caps. “The original swash italic capitals designed for the foundry Palatino are not available digitally”, states John Butler in his Palatino FAQ from 1998. Sadly enough, neither the release of Palatino Linotype (c.1999) nor of Palatino Nova (2005) – “a return to the original Palatino idea, and an extension of that idea to the future” [Linotype] – changed that.
Anyone looking for something like these should go take a look at Zapf’s display-oriented Renaissance Antiqua designfrom the 80s, as the digitisation(s?) of this do include swashes. Though the character set of swash characters is different on that, and I think inferior – I definitely prefer the 'E’ here (at top left) in particular.
