Allium, a name derived from Latin origins meaning “onion,” pays homage to Chicago, whose name comes from the Native American shikaakwa, or “wild onion.” It is also the name of Chicago’s newest restaurant located on the seventh floor of the award-winning Four Seasons Hotel Chicago. Allium features the farm-to-table, seasonally driven cuisine of award-winning Chef Kevin Hickey, and not only sources their food locally, but also their design. That’s where Faust comes in. Inspired by the chef’s casual and compelling twists on Chicago dining Faust created a logo that is too a twist on the familiar. The logotype is a hand-drawn interpretation of the allium plant’s long stems while the mark is an expression of it’s summertime bloom. And remaining true to the concept of locally sourced, Faust reached out to local type designer Jackson Cavanaugh, and debut’s his new typeface, the Harriet Series, through all of the support typography. The design experience is a comprehensive one, and helps the visitor from the street, up the elevator, through the lobby, and into the restaurant through signage, a templated menu system, and vitrine designs. Additional promotional collateral and in-room marketing rounds out the system. Faust provided concept, design, production and print management.
