    1. Caliban Books has a signed copy for sale. They share some more images of the cover and the interior, and note:

This book was Alvin Lustig’s first project for New Directions; he designed the label on the front board, the title page and the dust jacket.

    2. Is the first ‘t’ on the title page flipped? For symmetry?

    3. Wow, good catch!

    4. How would that have been achieved in 1941? Would this have been set on a Linotype?

    5. I’d reckon that there was some intermediary step (of photographic copying?) involved in making the title page.

    6. The specific dust jacket shown (above) is the second edition (I believe) of the title and was designed by Robert Lowry. (If you look closely, you can see his signature: “lowry”)

Lustig did design the cover and title page 'decorations’, as well as the DJ for the first edition.

    7. Nice catch, aaron. Thanks!

    8. You’re welcome, Stephen. It’s interesting that it was released with this new jacket, because the metal type designs were what attracted New Direction’s publisher James Laughlin to Lustig in the first place—those and a few key recommendations.
