Badmotorfinger is the third studio album by American rock band Soundgarden, released in October 1991. The cover illustration of the cyclone-like buzz saw blade with the spark-plug in the center is by Mark Dancey. Design: Walberg Design. Art Direction: Len Peltier.

The band logo used on the covers of the album and the three singles — “Jesus Christ Pose” (1991), “Outshined” (Dec. 1991) and “Rusty Cage” (April 1992) — as well as on related merchandise is in a modified Eurostile Bold Condensed. The caps were not simply stretched, but selectively elongated, so that the stroke widths remain intact (except for the joins in N which get way too dark). The resulting ultranarrow high-waisted letterforms are reminiscient of early-20th century grotesks like Aurora/Neue Aurora or Venus.

  1. Nice tribute. Perhaps we need a tag for “selectively stretched” type.

  2. Perhaps the hyper-extended glyphs tag covers that?
