Gemeli Micro is used throughout the visual identity of SPRING, an international festival for contemporary performing arts in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
SPRING presents new developments within the performing arts internationally today with a focus on crossovers between dance, theatre and performance and on art in public space. SPRING does this by organizing two festivals for open and interested audiences each year; the ten-day SPRING Performing Arts Festival in May and the three-day SPRING in Autumn in the fall.
The current identity was developed by Rotterdam-based Studio Spass and first introduced in 2017. Gemeli Micro by Production Type serves for everything from posters and program booklets to on-site signage and the website. The logo is based on caps from Gemeli Micro Bold. The second meaning of spring (as in jump) is subtly visualized by replacing the vowel with a gap.
As the name hints at, Gemeli Micro is intended for the use at 8pt and below. In small sizes, the typeface’s features – a tall x-height, compact extenders, wide proportions, airy spacing – ensure an optimal reading experience. In large-scale applications like the window lettering at the festival venue, Gemeli Micro’s ink traps transmute into eye-catchers with a high recognition value.
