Energy Surfboards was started in 1975 by Australian surfer and surfboard shaper Simon Anderson:

He is credited with the 1980 invention of a three-fin surfboard design, called the “thruster”, which remains the industry standard. — Wikipedia

There is no more collectible board from the innovation period of surfboard design than an early ’80s Energy thruster. — Board Collector

The Energy wordmark as seen on these boards uses the Stack typeface by Les Lawrence. It’s not clear who designed the logo. The accompanying “burning sun triangle logo” is credited to Hugh McLeod.

An article in Tracks Magazine from February 1981 (reproduced on surfresearch.com.au) includes a photograph of Anderson outside of the Energy Surfboards factory, 43 Carter Road, Brookvale. In the background, one can see a logo variation with beveled letterforms based on Stack.

  1. Seeing all these examples of Stack is really interesting—thanks for posting these!

  2. This is available somewhere?

  3. If you’re referring to the typeface, there is no official digitization yet. See the Stack page for more info.

G’day, I’d like to get hold of some Energy decals suitable for under the glassing for a board reproduction project. Any idea where I can get some? Thanks,

    Dave

Hello my name is Jake. I have one of these original 3 fin thrusters but the energy logo is sort of a cursive and not block letters…any ideas what year it may be, or do you have anymore info on the progressions of the energy logo over the years?

  6. Hi Jake, sorry, I don’t know. Maybe someone else has.
