Aaron Burns, best known for founding ITC, was first a practicing designer, creating collateral for industry firms like the Composing Room and the Issac Goldmann Company. He was a big fan of ATF’s gothics (News Gothic Extra Condensed and Lightline) and Latin Wide. The IG logo appears to be based on Umbra (a shadow version of Tempo). These ads, including process sketches, were published as part of the Lubalin 100 celebration.

  1. I’ve noticed that there’s quite a bit of Venus Extended usage here.

  2. Absolutely! Or, as specified in the sketch, “10pt Venus EXTRA BOLD CAPS” for the small type, and the lighter Bold Extended for “SOS”. Added, thanks.
