French edition of The Great Gatsby. Translation by Victor Llona, with a foreword by André Bay. Published by Le Club Français du Livre, Paris, 1952. Cover design by Jacques Darche. The title typeface probably is from the Italiennes Étroites series. The generically named “Narrow Italian” by the French foundry Deberny et Peignot belongs to the variant of the slab-serif (or “Egyptian”) letter style with exaggerated emphasis on the top and bottom parts. This subgenre is also known as “French Antique” in English, and used here for a novel set in the USA. The numerals are from an unidentified (wood?) typeface.
