I’m Mehmet Gözetlik, the designer of Public Gothic, and I have stumbled upon my typeface on a digital billboard of the sci-fi movie Looper – an American science fiction thriller film written and directed by Rian Johnson in 2012. It revolves around criminal syndicates using contracted killers called “loopers” to kill victims sent through time travel.

In one of the movie scenes, the main character John rides his red Mazda to a club. He sees a billboard about telekinetic energy at left, a digital billboard, that uses my vintage typeface! My Public Gothic appeared a whole 10 seconds long in the Looper movie. These 10 seconds seem to be very long for something that you created yourself – but in fact it’s very short.

My girlfriend (now she is my wife) was sitting next to me and I couldn’t say anything. Because I wasn’t sure. I mean, maybe you think you saw your own font than you realize it isn’t. I said nothing to her. I went home and made research for some hours to be sure. After a few hours of research, we were celebrating Public Gothic (Circular)’s first leading role.
