In the phototype era, film font makers went bonkers with “flair” variations, appending swashes and hyper-extended glyphs to classic typefaces without discretion. Do these mutant growths work better with a scripty ball-terminaled display face like Allegro? I’ll let you be the judge, but it sure makes me want to grow some pineapple plants!

  1. Here’s the glyph set of Allegro Flair (or Flare) in all its disputable glory:

Reproduced from Modern Display Alphabets. 100 Complete Fonts selected and arranged by Paul E. Kennedy from the Franklin Photolettering Catalogue, Dover Publications Inc., 1974.

  2. Wow! We were just talking about this, Florian! Crazy a use came up! Did you get the book?!

  3. Yes, a happy coincidence! Turned out that book was sitting on one of my studiomate’s shelves.

  4. I put all the Franklin Photolettering flares from the Paul E. Kennedy book, here.
