Penguin paperback edition from 2001. Cover design by Jesse Marinoff Reyes with photographs courtesy of Bettmann Corbis (photographic treatment by Jae Song). The title is in ITC Pioneer. Somehow the counters in R and D were shifted to the right a notch. Interior set in New Caledonia (not pictured).
See also the first hardcover (1970) and paperback (1972) editions for alternative typographic approaches to the same book. While the former relies on the bold and strong Thorowgood, the typeface used for the latter might have been chosen for its name: Americana for an American (football) saga. In this regards, the cover of the Penguin edition is the synthesis: Pioneer is a weighty display face and also has a quintessentially American name.
