Here Abide Monsters by Andre Norton (DAW)

Here Abide Monsters was first published by Atheneum in 1973, with cover art by Jack Gaughan. This is the first paperback edition by DAW Books from 1974, using the same illustration, but a different typeface. It’s shown as Cadence in Lettergraphics’ 1976 catalog, but not yet in their 1969 Letter-Fan, suggesting it was added in the early 1970s. The origin and designer are unknown to me. With its squarish, spurless letterforms, the contrasted serifless face is similar to Decatur, designed by Vincent Pacella for Photo-Lettering, Inc. a few years earlier. Pacella Decatur was specified for science fiction paperback covers, too, see Warriors of Mars. Cadence is less skillfully drawn, note the clunky terminals of e or t. I’m not aware of a digital option that comes close. [edit: Cadence is credited to Ray Cruz in a Schaedler catalog].
