CarvalhoBernau’s Algebra is paired with Gill Sans for an all new website, artwork and album art for Mumford & Sons’ Delta album. Design by Studio Juice, who have collaborated with the band since their first album in 2008. In their case study, Studio Juice writes:

Delta, the fourth album by Mumford & Sons, takes its name from the places where order meets abandon, where adolescence meets adulthood. Leaving the nocturnal cities of Wilder Mind, we headed for the untamed environment to create the album’s art direction and campaign identity.

This emphasis on rich video is reflected in an all-new website, which has been fully redesigned to complement the Delta story. A refreshed band logo and set of GOTR wings anchor the campaign, which keep the refinement of their predecessors but mark an exciting new era.

The ampersand is customized.

  1. With all the family/relations associations in the band name and the photoshoot, it might have been a better choice to avoid Gill Sans (and maybe rather choose a different typeface with a similar structure, like Dover Sans or Foundry Sterling).

  2. The band is from London, though! Something else would not be quite as good.

Despite its worldwide presence, Gill Sans can be considered a ‘local type’ in London: it was designed by London resident Eric Gill, who drew inspiration from the typeface that Edward Johnston designed for the London underground.

  3. Hi Thiago, I know that quote (I wrote it). Local type is a bit besides the point here: there’s more London type than Gill Sans, and type from London is not a Mumford & Sons theme, judging from the artwork for the band over the last decade on the Studio Juice website. Delta for example primarily uses a non-London typeface.

  4. Sorry, you are right, I didn’t know. I just really like noticing trends like that.

  5. Euclid Triangle would have been cool. I used to really have a soft spot for Corinthian, too.

  6. Corinthian would’ve been a nice one too, yes!

  7. I guess I’ll throw in the obvious LL Brown and P22 Underground. I’ll include Mr Eaves Sans, too.

  8. Just two weeks ago, Indra Kupferschmid has shared a list of alternatives to Gill Sans on her blog. Christoph Koeberlin and the Typefacts team have previously compiled some suggestions, too.
