From 1973 till 1975, Pan Science Fiction re-issued some of Robert Heinlein’s books with a new series look featuring Face Photosetting’s Pipeline all uppercase.

Some of the illustrations are by Patrick Woodroffe (from 74 onwards). The other illustrations are not credited.

Good choice. I like this font a lot. Very distinctive. I need to see if I have any of these.

I designed Pipeline in 1969, I was type director at Face Photosetting. It’s nice to see people still like my faces some 50 years after I drew the orginals,

I designed about 50 or 60 fonts right up untill we sold the company in the mid ’80s

Hello Mick,

Very nice to see you chiming in here! Pipeline is a smashing face. I recently got my hands on a Face Photosetting catalog from 1970, where Pipeline is listed as a new addition.

I would love to know more about the history of Face. Here’s what I have found out so far. It would be great if you could elaborate on these basic facts:

The company was started in 1968 by John McConnell and Chris Dubber in London. It was known as Face Photosetting until c. 1978 and later went under the names Face Type Ltd. (1980/81) and Face Ronchetti Ltd. (since 1982).

Did Face have any other typeface designers on staff, or did they work with external contributors? Whom was the company sold to?

Is there a list of the typefaces that you have designed? Do you recall who takes credit for Pluto, is this your design as well? What about Airkraft, Sauce, Candy, Fulham Road, or Ink Blob Script? Can you confirm that Allsorts was drawn by John Gorham?

I found topic on about Davida. Then it led me to other links. I just wanted to add I have this typeface in the Conways catalog in it. With all the alternates. Mick would confirm how many alternates. If its allowed and i have time I’ll upload it. Florian let me know! But I love this type already. It’s got a multitude of uses.
