This poster/flyer for a concert by Dick Dale at The Press Club in Sacramento, CA in 2012 combines two typefaces by House Industries that feel appropriate for the “King of the Surf Guitar”: Ed Interlock, designed by Ken Barber with Ed Benguiat based on PLINC Newlock from the 1960s, and Typography of Coop Condensed, made by Barber based on lettering by hot rod artistChris “Coop” Cooper.
Unfortunately, the addition of the supporting act almost ruins it: Marker Felt Wide adds a different, dissonant tone. A bundled system font for decades, it has accumulated amateur vibes. The outline effect and the lack of kerning don’t help.

The same template was used for another gig at the Asheville Music Hall in 2013, with more interlocking marvel at the top. Coop Condensed here was replaced by Grim Ghost. This adaptation suffers from a lack of hierarchy.

The choice of Ed Interlock pays tribute to the lettering on the cover of Dick Dale’s debut album Surfers’ Choice, released on Deltone Records in 1962, and designed by John Severson (1933–2017), founder of Surfer magazine.
