Phoebe Poole, 18, who was holding a placard saying “never gonna give EU up” in reference to a song by 1980s popstar Rick Astley, wasn’t old enough to vote in the 2016 referendum.
“We have come here today because we feel like our future has been stolen from us. It is our generation that is going to have to live with the consequences of this disaster,” she told Reuters. — independent.ie
I don’t know whether the placard is the one by Phoebe Poole mentioned in the Reuters article. The Rickrolling meme referenced in the slogan has been associated with Anti-Brexit protests since April 2016. Just after the Pro-Brexit campaign had announced “Vote Leave” as their motto, Mario Van Poppel registered several web addresses similar to the official one. As a result, voteleave.net, voteleave.org, voteleave.com and voteleave.co.uk all directed link clickers to the infamous song by Rick Astley.
To those marching today, please save placards, ephemera and anything you consider important and donate to #archives @BishopsgateInst. Make sure history knows why we marched!
