Konrad Farner: Francisco José de Goya. Richter und Gerichteter, Zürich: Lutz, 1970.

Starting in 1970 Hans-Rudolf Lutz (1939–1998) self-published a series of texts by the Marxist art historian Konrad Farner (1903–1974). In order to break a longstanding boycott of Farner, who as a distinctive member of the Swiss Communist Party (“Partei der Arbeit”) after the 1956 Hungarian uprising was vilified as an “enemy of freedom”. Only in the course of the ’68 movement Farner was rediscovered and given the opportunity to take part in the discourse about art and social commitment. The present booklet – first of the series – contains the text of a lecture on the Spanish painter Francisco José de Goya, held at the Kunsthaus Zürich in February 1970. From 1975 on new editions of some of the more popular booklets (not this one) were published by the Verlagsgenossenschaft (later Limmat Verlag), a cooperative publishing house Lutz helped to set up and for which he worked for some time as a book designer.

Some more examples can be found on the website of the Verlag Hans-Rudolf Lutz.
