“The space spy’s mission was to find and kill the peacemakers”

The Sword Swallower is the first novel by Ron Goulart (b. 1933), and part of the Barnum System series. It was originally issued as a short story in 1967. Doubleday & Company published a hardback edition in 1968. This is Dell’s paperback edition from 1970.

The title typeface is Pousse Cafe, a set of Art Deco caps designed by Robert Montgomery and issued by Photo-Lettering, Inc. in 1969. Most of its letterforms are drawn on a circle pattern. Here, its proportions were condensed, and the three plywood-like layers merged into a solid shadow. The cover art is by Ron Walotsky (1943–2002) who had studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
