The Wall Street Journal’s design team, currently led by Thomas Williams and Fernando Turch, continues to roll out exciting updates to their digital products. Their latest release is a brand new Apple TV app, featuring a completely overhauled UI that is perfectly aligned with the WSJ’s typography and color palette.
Escrow, Font Bureau’s iconic Scotch serif that has served as a cornerstone of the publication’s identity for decades, is front and center in the new app, linking the brand’s heritage to this newer platform with its hallmark foundation of excellent journalism at the forefront. As the WSJ’s Adam Fisher-Cox put it: “using Escrow for the video titles lent the interface an unmistakable WSJ ‘look’, allowing us to use Apple’s excellent San Francisco for all smaller labels and descriptions.” Retina by Frere-Jones Type appears in multiple widths, for headlines (“Moving Upstream”) and titles of TV shows (last image).
