First edition cover of F.D. Reeve’s The Brother, designed by Pat de Groot. The cover emphasizes the heavy but soft forms of Volta. Pat worked at Farrar, Straus & Giroux for years designing interiors and covers, including another book by F.D. Reeve, The Blue Cat. She also made this great cover for The Taxi.
Pat de Groot didn’t like big roman caps, it seems. In this cover, all caps were scaled down considerably. Unfortunately, their weight is now too light, in relation to the lowercase. She would have loved a variable font with cap height (or x-height) axis! See also her title page design for a book by Tom Wolfe.
