The typeface used for this sign is basically Memphis, a slab serif designed by Rudolf Wolf. (Various styles were released, starting in 1929 and throughout the 1930s).

But the condensed styles of Memphis never made it to digital – at least not under that name. The only version that is available was released by Bitstream under the thrilling name of Geometric Slabserif 703. Compared to the Bitstream fonts, the letters on the sign were stretched horizontally (i.e., artificially made wider).

  1. The sign was already mounted in October 2017, but not yet in March 2013. Back then, the sign was set in caps from a bold Baskerville – a more generic and, in my opinion, less successful choice.
