Album artwork and animated videos for Begin Writing Your Story Here, a limited editon LP by Marbod, including a Riso-printed poster. From Verydeeprecords:

From its meandering ambient beginnings to its housy finale, Marbod’s new mini-album showcases the Berlin-based producer’s versatility and unheard knack for texture and depth. “Begin Writing Your Story Here” is his first release for Verydeeprecords and – while never straying too far from the dancefloor – also a stylistic expansion from his former works on his very own Lofile label. Take, for example, “Aufabwegen”, a track that sonifies the eponymous going astray by combining percussive clicks and brushes with a subtly pulsating bass and nature samples. It’s followed by “CarlXyii1X” – an airy nod to Marbod’s house roots and only seemingly from a different musical planet. Marbod smoothly interweaves different styles to a coherent whole, all the while leaving enough room for the listener to ‘begin writing their own story’. The central piece of the 6 tracks is “Brainwashed Pizza”. It’s in the surprising turns this record takes, in its subtle cracks in the pavement and in the many details left and right of the main road, where a plot is waiting to be discovered.

All music written and produced by Dirk Puchta. Mastered by Isabel Schroer. Design by Philipp Dittmar. This is VDR043, 2020.

  1. This use reveals the downside of having chunky protruding serifs (e.g. to the left of b) and especially a long flag in r, as it is the case in Zaft. When they coincide in a word like “Marbod”, the result is a disturbing gap: Mar bod. I would have tried trimming the r, and maybe also dropping the top (left) serif of b, in order to achieve a more even spacing.

  2. This typeface is also available as Zaft², with Céline Hurka. It features styles in two variations (A, B and C) but is infused with the vibes of the late 1960s/early 1970s and the reverse contrast style.

  3. Thanks, Jay! WT Zaft² now has an entry in the Fonts In Use database.

I’m pleased to see that this spinoff addresses the spacing issues I had niggled about: It comes with contextual alternates (feature code by Rutherford Craze).

Apropos: The original Zaft (now?) has contextual ligatures “which form rounded connections between mirroring vertices” and mitigate the issue.
