The wayfinding system for the reimagined Barbican Arts Centre in London is by Cartlidge Levene and Studio Myerscough collaborating with architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris. It features Futura SH from Scangraphic, a version of the classic typeface designed specifically for big sizes. And this award-winning signage over 7 floors of a massive cultural building is about as big as it gets. Some of the signs are floor-to-cieling lowercase Futura with bright orange swaths contrasting the original structure’s dreary grey concrete. I visited shortly after the Centre’s 2006 reopening and I can verify that it’s a striking and memorable experience.
