Don Munson’s neo-Victorian MGB Patrician is used with initial and terminal swash caps (see also EndcapS) for “Survivants”. The tall sinuous glyphs that descend below the baseline echo the long-necked sea serpents emerging from the sea.

The Shadow Survivors” is a book by French cryptozoologist Jean-Jacques Barloy (1939–2013), published by Arthaud in 1985. The cover illustration as well as the interior b/w illustrations (not shown) are by Gérard Deshayes. It’s very likely the same artist who is also credited with the cover design for two books by Joris-Karl Huysmans. Pauline Nuñez located the website of one Gérard Deshayes (merci!), who in 2011 identified as contemporary painter. “Born in 1940, he studied intaglio printmaking at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Graphiques Estienne. He pursued a career as a graphic designer and illustrator in advertising and publishing while continuing his personal painting work.”

Unfortunately, my husband Gerard Deshayes died in 21th of March. I’m very proud of him, and of his works.

I was moved to see his drawings and covers are appreciated.

  2. Brigitte, I’m sorry for your loss. Mes sincères condoléances. Thank you for leaving a comment here. Gérard’s work is not forgotten, and his memory will live on.
