Meridian Books is a little less than three years old, but we’re already celebrating our millionth anniversary. In early 1958 — thanks to the 1,776 bookstores now stocking Meridian Books — we will sell our millionth Meridian and Living Age Book.
Elaine Lustig Cohen designed several book jackets for Meridian Books, as well as direct mail advertising (like this piece), letterhead, and other collateral. Like her first husband, Alvin Lustig, who passed away in 1955, she favored strong, modernist concepts. Elaine’s work, however, was often typographically driven, with illustration playing a secondary role, or absent altogether. Letterform Archive holds a large collection of Lustig Cohen’s work, much of which can be seen in an article by Florence Fu and in Letterform’s Online Archive.
