This is a story of a Use as much as of its design reference.

The Use is the cover of The Many Faces of Bing Crosby, a jazz album released in 1977 by Italian label Oxford. Its design employs Broadway for the title and Letraset’s Stripes for the frame around the artist’s portrait.

And then we have the design reference from Letraset’s 1975 catalog in which we can find a very similar frame with a portion of it made with letters, punctuation, and special characters form Stripes. The catalog also features some other pieces showcasing a diverse collection from Letraset, along with illustrations that suggest the style of each of the many faces, see the separate post on Fonts In Use.

The inspiration: Broadway and a frame made from elements of Stripes, as seen on the cover of a Letraset catalog from 1975. In place of Bing Crosby, the framed image depicts Laurel & Hardy.
