Milton Glaser’s cover design for Dutton’s 1961 paperback edition of The Family Chronicle, written by Sergey Aksakov (1791–1859) and first published as Semeinaya khronika in 1856.
An autobiographical classic describing the opening of Russia’s eastern frontier.
The display typeface is a Latin with extreme horizontal contrast. I haven’t found out about its origins yet. I’d assume it has 19th century wood type roots. In the 1960s, a phototype version was offered as part of Headliners’ Morgan Press Collection, under catalog number W-139. This style appears in the Solotype catalog (1992) as Bullfrog Extended. In 1993, Richard W. Mueller made a digitization under the name Mantel.
The precursor to Bullfrog is shown by Page in 1882 as 8Line No. 139, alongside three variants (bold, with screws, contoured), cf. Rob Roy Kelly’s American Wood Type 1828–1900.
