To the 5 Boroughs is the sixth studio album by the American hip-hop group Beastie Boys. The album was released on June 14, 2004 internationally, and a day later in the United States.
For the artwork, designer Nathaniel Hornblower aka group member Adam Yauch used a Manhattan skyline drawing by Matteo Pericoli, from his book Manhattan Unfurled. The “Beastie Boys” logo on the front of the album uses Sinaloa by Rosmarie Tissi. In the Japanese import release, the typeface is also present on the slipcover that folds over the spine of the album case, and the CD itself.
I’d like to add that it’s not a direct use of Sinaloa, but rather lettering based on Tissi’s typeface. This is probably most notably in the compact S and the Y with the closed top, but also in the placement, angle, length and width of the characteristic stripes. For instance, the original E has the stripe pattern at the bottom of the glyph, cf. this Letragraphic sheet.
