Bitum in use for the new identity of the Archaeological Museum of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (IA NASU) in Kyiv. Founded in 1966 and opened in 1969, the museum has 10,000 exhibits that reflect the ancient history of Ukraine from the time of man’s appearance here to the late Middle Ages.

From луч studio:

The shape of the new logo – an abbreviation in the form of two condensed capital letters “AM” – was inspired by typography from books, magazines, maps, and other printed matter of museum. At the same time, the elongated outlines of the logo resemble the shape of a tusk, which is one of the most iconic items in the museum’s collection.

The new identity uses the grotesque Bitum in only Regular weight. We deliberately didn’t aim to limit the layout rules to any one typesetting, so it keeps flexible and adaptable to different formats and may perform different tasks, while remaining recognizable by using only one weight. Bitum has emotional and easily recognizable features of it’s letter constructions, stands out in street communication and works perfectly in a large size.

  1. This identity is in the process of being rolled out. At least some of the images show mockups and unrealized exemplary uses. The website URL shown in some images, amkyiv.com, does not exist (yet), and the “Cuman Steppe Music” banner has been photoshopped into an ubiquitous stock image. Also, I wonder if an exhibition by an Ukrainian museum would have posters and collateral that are primary or exclusively in English.

Please note (everyone) that we at Fonts In Use want to show type at work in the real world. Images should show what is, and not what could be.

This identity is not fictional, though, as one can see at the museum’s Facebook page which already shows the new logo and graphics set in Bitum. That’s why we decided to add it to the Collection.

  2. Is the AM monogram custom drawn, or based on a font? Grandmaster comes fairly close.
