The Lost Species Handbook is an illustrated guidebook exploring the social and symbolic bonds humans once shared with animals, and reveals how humans have contributed to the decline of Britain’s wildlife since the Middle Ages.

Graphic design by Studio LP, original illustrations by visual artist and researcher, Prof. Lucy Orta, and texts by historian Prof. Sophie Page.

Referencing books and common design features from the Middle Ages, we used Or Lemmen Regular and Italic by Or Type for the main text and body copy. This typeface speaks in a way which connects to nature and the Earth, so felt perfect for the content of the publication. It is also beautifully legible when set as body copy. On the cover of the book, and an additional collection of mask-making templates, OR Lemmen is paired with Neue Helvetica.

The book is available as a download on the website of publisher Orta.
