Minimal New York City (Clarkson Potter, 2020) is a graphic, gritty, witty 192-page gift book by Michael Arndt which juxtaposes pairs of iconic New York City objects, sites, and phenomena via minimal, graphic illustrations. The result is often both familiar and surprising, witty and sometimes gritty, always graphic.

There are visual puns; there are verbal puns; there are sometimes visual and verbal puns.

The full bleed illustrations and their similarities and contrasts are the focus of the book. I needed a typeface that worked as well at 40 point caption size as it did at 8 point back matter size. Graceful, clean, sharp, unobtrusive, and extremely legible. Enter one of my favorite and hardest working typefaces, one that never lets you see it sweat and makes typography look easy… Neutraface.

Prominently featured at the MoMA design shop in midtown Manhattan and translated into German as That’s New York, this book appeals to tourists, New Yorkers, and wanna-be New Yorkers alike, anyone who has visited the city and been surprised, shocked, stimulated, and serenaded by this city of contrasts.
