In a comment to another recent contribution, Mark Simonson pointed out that many Letraset users used to repurpose a tilde as a hyphen. This was done here, too.
The sheet of rubdown type shown below doesn’t contain any proper hyphens or dashes. Letraset apparently relied on their users’ inventiveness to revert to (parts of) a rotated i or l if they really needed a straight horizontal of some kind. The sheet does include three wavy tildes, though, see the bottom right corner with the usual pile of diacritics.
