Lots of Karnak Black Italic – and exclusively Karnak Black Italic – on the cover of Oklahoma!, “a brilliant new recording of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s greatest hits”, released by Columbia Records in 1964. Featuring John Raitt, Florence Henderson, Jack Elliott, Ara Berberian, and Phyllis Newman. Orchestra and chorus under direction of Franz Allers, with new orchestrations by Philip J. Lang. Photography by Bob Cato.

Karnak was Ludlow’s contribution to the 1930s wave of slab serifs, and is similar to Stymie, Memphis/Cairo, Welt-Antiqua and others.
