British International Research Institutes
The British International Research Institutes (BIRI) are centres of research excellence, and hubs in a network that spans the Black Sea and southern Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia. Each institute has its own distinctive history and research profile, based on regionally focused expertise and experience.
The logo has been designed to capture values of connectedness, heritage and excellence; with the unique forms of the I’s inspired by the Doric order that has influenced so much of the region’s architecture. The modern serif forms were designed to balance a feeling historic permanence and enduring relevance.
Across applications, Tobias lends a bold and confident voice to headlines. The modern serif typeface originates from Baroque roots and lends a transitional appearance. Neue Haas Grotesk is then used for majority of typesetting; the typeface was chosen for its modernity and legibility as well as its wide character set for use in multiple languages.
The typographic identity is supported by a new marque—a symbol of collaboration and connectedness. The marque is formed from eight points, representative of the eight founding institutes, coming together to form a star in the negative space; a leading light in arts, humanities and social sciences research.
