This 1.5-inch button was made in 1974 for the liberal feminist magazine, Ms.. I can only speculate on the reasons behind using Filmotype Major for the message, but perhaps the goal was something human that evoked a handmade poster or protest graffiti. Phototype styles that emulated casual hand lettering were commonplace in the 1960s and 1970s for everything from Dr. Seuss books and sitcom titles to issues of The Black Panther.
