The world-famous Swiss graphic artist and illustrator Celestino Piatti (1922–2007) designed more than 6,000 book covers and over 500 posters, mainly for the dtv Verlagsgesellschaft. Between 1963 and 1976, however, he also created seven books for children, published together for the first time in this volume. These books are all in A4 in the original – three in portrait and four in landscape format. The challenge in the design was to combine the different orientations in one book size without losing the original character. This was achieved in the form of a subtle reinterpretation of these publications in close coordination with the publisher and the association “Celestino Piatti – the visual heritage”.

Text taken from Kurt Dornig’s website. For this anthology published by NordSüd, Piatti’s “house typeface”, Akzidenz-Grotesk, was replaced by Roland Stieger’s NN Alena.

  1. That’s what I call – felicitous! At least as far as the grid and the rest of the design is concerned. But as for the font selection, I could have imagined something more like the Mikado – because the short sentences would allow it – or even better the Markin LT.
