One Sheet (27″×41″) poster for the theatrical release of Hello, Dolly!,

a musical romantic comedy film based on the 1964 Broadway production of the same name. Directed by Gene Kelly and written and produced by Ernest Lehman, the film stars Barbra Streisand, Walter Matthau, Michael Crawford, Danny Lockin, Tommy Tune, Fritz Feld, Marianne McAndrew, E. J. Peaker and Louis Armstrong.

Buffalo Expanded is used for the title, set on a circle with some skillful arching, fanning, and distorting. Originally drawn by Ed Benguiat for Photo-Lettering in 1964, this face was digitized by Donald Roos in 2004 and is available from House Industries. The names are set in Beton schmalfett (with its alternate R) and Venus schmalmager.

Detail: the flowers on the hat appear to be made with a Spirograph (introduced in 1965) or a similar drawing device

  1. See also the Czechoslovak poster for this movie. Designer Eva Galová-Vodrážková repurposed the typography from the American version, and integrated it into her illustrated portraits of Streisand and Armstrong. She didn’t directly copy and paste the letterforms, though: at least the word “HELLO” curves in the other direction.
