Our cover for a New York Times special section that appeared just before the 2020 US Presidential Election. Fifteen New York Times columnists answer the question “What Have We Lost?” during the Trump administration. Early on we recognized that this question itself contains fifteen letters, so we could therefore link up each letter to a columnist’s article. Starting with a foundation of Helvetica Medium, we cut out the letters as incomplete stencils and utilized spray paint to render these broken letterforms. The result was surprisingly readable—and despite utilizing the very familiar forms of Helvetica as a foundation—the statement manages to command the reader’s attention.
