Royez Musik started business in 1972, and now counts six stores in Amiens, Lille, Longueau, Reims, Rouen, Paris. This is their shop in Lille, France.

Choc by Roger Excoffon is one of my favourites. He designed it in 1955 and it is as French as a croissant or a Citroën. It’s flamboyant, playful and whimsical. And if you design something with Choc, it immediately gets that fifties French vibe, no matter how you use it. I think it’s a masterpiece. So when I see one in use, my heart jumps up. And in this particular case with the neon, I find it even better.

  1. A charming find. Thanks for sharing, Roel!

This application with the neon tubes as thin heartline is a good reminder that Choc (1955, top) was conceived as a bolder variation of Mistral (1953, bottom), with more weight and unconnected letterforms, but still coming from the same hand. See also Bruce Kennett’s lecture on Excoffon’s type designs.
