Underground Resistance is central to the second wave of Detroit techno. UR presented itself as a musical collective that resists the economic model of the USA, producing uncompromising music geared toward promoting awareness and facilitating political change. Their music embodied a kind of abstract militancy by presenting themselves as a paramilitary group fighting against commercial mainstream entertainment industry. The use of the Stencil typeface is linked to its embodiment by the American military forces. See also this documentary.
