In contemporary photography, there are indications of artistic tendencies towards overcoming the two-dimensional picture, working in sculptural forms and integrating the medium of photography more strongly into the space provided. Format f is a co-operation between the sectors of Photography in the Seminar for Art and the Science of Art at the University of Dortmund and the Künstlerhaus in Dortmund. The annual series of exhibitions illuminates the relation between photography and the third dimension. It opens a field of experimentation beyond the classical use of photogarphy. This field allows, in particular, the integration of three-dimensional shaping.

The cover shows the bare walls of the exhibition hall. A 3D space can be formed on the open flap, dipping light penetrates the cover window and playing shadows are created. The book is transferred from its two-dimensional character into the third dimension. Opale and Euclid Circular A were chosen to support the reduced character of the book with their clear geometrical forms. A subtle play between the two is created and only on closer observation does it become clear that two different types of lettering are featured.
