From Alan Mays’ collection of broadsides, handbills, signs and other ephemera. This cardboard sign advertising home-made bean soup for a quarter dollar is undated. Judging from the featured typefaces – Nesbitt’s Gothic, caps from an Antique Condensed, and numerals from a French Antique – it might have been made in the last quarter of the 19th century. No size is given, but chances are that it was printed from wood type.
