Barny is the debut novel of Béatrix Beck (1914–2008), first published by Gallimard in 1948. Shown here is the cover and the intro sequence of a book club edition from 1956, published by Club du livre du mois, Paris, 1956. For the title, Claudette Duparc worked with all-lowercase Annonce. Each of the stems of the letters is reinforced by a sort of armature in the form of a black rectangle. The author’s name is shown in an unidentified formal script with similarities to Marina Script.

  1. Calligraphiques Serrées as shown by Deberny & Cie. around 1920 comes close to the script. The showing doesn’t include a full character set, and there are considerable differences between the sizes, as well as alternate glyphs, so I can’t be sure. It would be an obvious choice, location-wise.
