Many German publishers – especially such who offer sheet music – loved Tiemann-Mediäval, like Schott and Peters. This title page for Arnold Schönberg’s Fünf Orchesterstücke (Five Pieces for Orchestra) is an obvious example. It was first published by C. F. Peters, today known as Edition Peters, in 1913. This copy appears to be from a later date, issued after the publisher relocated to Frankfurt am Main in 1950.

  1. Great find! I work on the revival of Tiemann-Mediäval, it will be hopefully out on Kyiv Type Foundry in 2023.

  2. That’s interesting. Looking forward to your interpretation, Yevgeniy! There is already a digitization by Gerhard Helzel, in two optical sizes, but it’s only available from an obscure source – I yet have to see it in use. There definitely is room for another take. Do you plan to include the original’s swash initials?

  3. Hello Yevgeniy and Florian,
I did a revival of the roman style as semester project at ÉCAL last year, which I expanded with italics. You can find some examples of it on my Instagram.

Also I’m happy to share the specimen I have or exchange for italic specimens, because that is something difficult to find.

  4. János, great to hear about the new interest in the typefaces by Walter Tiemann!

I have emailed a scanned specimen for Tiemann-Mediäval including the italics as well as accompanying ornaments and border elements to both of you.
